Post mortem: Finding the core and steal it’s gold!

Last Monday we got an assignment within our new group to take one game we all like and find out just why we like it and then make a paper prototype of it. At first we thought of adventure games and horror games but getting the feel of adventure and horror is kinda hard to translate into a paper prototype.
After a necessary food break we decided upon Minecraft. And mainly the mining and  crafting perspective but also the community feel […]

Board game concept

Today I had a meeting with my group about the board game that we’ve been tasked to develop. We have to come up with a idea for a board game and then make it from scratch. Other groups will try out our games and give us feedback throughout the process and we’ll also try their games.
We started of by brainstorming for different ideas. We asked ourself what kind of theme we wanted for our game, but we got stuck. Instead we […]

Brainstorming about Understanding board games project

Today my group and i brainstormed about the upcoming group project where we are to create a boardgame from scratch.
First of we threw out random aesthetic words just to get started, we ended up with words like feeling accomplished, lonlyness, fear, despiration, paranioa.
After that we took some of the woords and try to give them some contex in the form of gameplay and how the game would play.
We thought of you being desserted on a island with other players and you where […]

First Time

We have now started working on our major assignment and it’s become really apparent to me that it is the first time that anyone of us is doing it. There are so many things to think of and it is hard to remember them all and harder still trying to do them in the right order. I think we have the information we need, we just need to learn how to use it and I feel that we are sorting […]

Board Games

These past weeks I have worked with boardgames with my group, We were assigned to play three boardgames at least three times each. So we could get a clear view of the strength and weaknesses in the games. Through that we were also supposed to decide what the core system was and what the best system was and etc…
We played these games with ease and could easily decide what the answer to the questions were and work from there.
It was […]

Post Mortem – Core Mechanics and Team 8

During the first weeks of our studies, we we’re put into several groups of about seven people. These groups/teams were supposed to work together on, as far as I understood, all group assignments and projects over the first year. I was part of Group 6, which according to me really was a dream team. We worked well together, everyone spoke their mind freely and everyone had great ideas that we all pretty much agreed on, ideas that truly worked in […]

What are Serious Games?

In addition to my course in Advanced Game Design, I’m currently also reading a course about Serious Games. This post will explain what a Serious Game is and some examples of their usage
Serious Games
The best way to describe a Serious Game is as a game whose main purpose is not entertainment. Ben Sawyer states that “Serious games are solutions to problems. Any meaningful use of computerized games or game industry resources whose chief function is not entertainment are serious games.” […]
