Blog revival and 3D Week 1

After a break in the summer i’m back into the blogging game. I’ve started a new course in 3D and I will for ten weeks post 3D related stuff. This week I will be analyzing three different screenshots from different games and I will also be posting some of my work I’ve worked on throughout the week. I will start with the screenshots. I will talk about what makes them good and/or bad from an artist’s perspective, let’s get started!

Starting up!

So for the first time in my life I am getting an official place to gather work, ideas, and other things. A first step on the path I’ve just set up on. Hopefully it will be filled with content as the coming months passes and the education proceeds. So cheers for the future!

Week 36: Principles of Art Applied to 3D Games and Intro to 3D

Hello! It’s a new year and I’ve got a new course to dig into. It’s time to put this blog back into active service, this time it’ll stay that way. I promise!
This week has been quite eventful, with a focus on image composition and our first try at using the 3DS Max software.
So, to start off: Image Composition!

Geometrical, diagonal and low-key. This picture provides a sense of high tension and danger by using the lines to convey that something […]

Week 36

Week 36 almost over.
Finished first assignment and took on the responsibility of being referee in a D&D scenario. Which I’ve never done before.

07.09.14

It’s soon 10 o’clock on a Sundays night. And I’m sitting in front of my laptop with coffee and a pile of books. I have realised that some of my classmates have started using their blogs to actually write about school and what we have learnt the first week so I thought I would do it too. First of all, this week have been so fast, I can’t believe week 2 of being a game design student is starting tomorrow. […]

3D-I Week 1: Screenshot analysis and temp-level creation

Starting a new year here at Gotland, the focus has now switched from 2D to 3D. ”Finally” if you ask me. Given that this is where I’ve been focused for the bigger part of my life, and being entirely self-taught, it’s nice to finally get some professional guidance for a change.
Given that this is the first course in 3D (Aptly named 3D-I), the initial focus is on really basic stuff, since there is no requirement of prior knowledge. This I, […]

3D Week 1 – A Great Start

Greetings!
Now at the end of the week I’ll go through what I, together with others, did on the last two 3D lessons.
I’ll try to keep it short and consolidate all the notes I took. But we’ll see how that goes!
Lesson #1
In this lesson we were given four images, either screenshots of promotional images of games, and the task to analyze them using the elements of art.
#1 The Evil Within

A game I’ve not seen or heard anything about. Which is good, […]

Welcome to my blog!

Hello and welcome to my blog. My name is Fredrik Engström and I study Game Design & Programming @ Uppsala University Campus Gotland. This blog will record what I do with my assignments, how I do them and what I learn from them.
As of right now, I have no  prior experience with programming and very little of game design. I have however, some experience with modding and level design… I hope to change this (and so it shall).
Stay tuned

First week 3d class

This picture is a scene from some kind of Batman game, I haven’t played it myself so therefore I can only go with what I am seeing in order to analyse. The first thing that caught my eye is the absence of horizontal and vertical lines and how the picture screams ACTION! The tilted perspective creates diagonal lines all over the scene. And the bright areas of the character on top really pull the attention towards the foreground.
The background […]
