Portobello Market
This week my group played the game Portobello Market. The goal of the game is to achieve and maintain the highest score when the game ends.
In order to get score you get to place down market stands along the roads that goes between the eleven squares. Next to the road where you place down your markets there are numbers indicated how much score you will receive when the road has been completed.
Just having the road filled with market stands alone […]

Impending Doom
Introduction
The Impending Doom game is where the player will lose in the end no matter what, although the player has to feel that he or she will be able to make it. This Impending Doom game that I have created takes places on a mountain. Two climbers are on an excursion when suddenly the female character slips and falls down. The challenge is to control the grip of the female character with the mouse keys. The game is set up […]

Wall jumping!
Today I continued on Project SlashR. I decided to work on the player and his movement. I deleted the code for the movement I did last time because it felt a little bit wonky. This time I chose to handle all movement of the player with forces. When I move the joystick left and right I apply a force in that direction and when I’m not using the joystick I apply force in the opposite direction to stop the player.
Using only forces like in real life I […]

Reverse engineering
I was sick while the rest of the class worked with reverse engineering, so I decided to try it out on my own instead! Basically, you need to take a digital game, figure out what you think the core experience is, find the mechanics that enforce that experience and make a board/card game with those mechanics.
So this is the game that I managed to make:
You’ll need:
a board that looks like this (or at least vaguely similar)
(the board consists of light squares […]

4-week milestone
I hit the 4-week “milestone” in the studies of game design. What did we do in the four weeks’ time? Below’s a summary.
Swedish communication course:
* compose a popular science article about a topic related to your studies (in Swedish)
* discuss the article in a group of 5, make the suggested changes; provide a brief summary of what you changed (in Swedish)
* compose an essay about a topic related to your studies (in Swedish)
* read an essay about an author’s personal relationship to writing and […]

Photoshop dump
Painting, and hell, drawing in general is a funny thing. By all accounts I whine more about it than anything else. I get bored and lose interest in a piece or I become increasingly frustrated trying to finish it. Spend hours upon hours on something I wind up hating after a week.
So the fact that I inevitably keep starting up new pieces really says something about how satisfying it is to have finished creating something. Anyway, here’s some recent stuff […]

Postmortem Board Game
A little less than a week ago we got an assignment in class: pick a game, determine the core experience, and try to emulate that with some kind of board game. My group, figuring we’d better pick a game that was generally well known, and specifically known and played by all of us as the subject of our assignment, we chose the Worms series to base it on. It had the added bonus of a relatively high likelihood of translating […]
