3D Computer Graphics – Theory and Application I: Week 1
The first week of the 3D course was focused mainly around the elements of art and how these are applied in context of digital games. We started with analyzing promotional images and screenshots from other games. Below is a brief analysis of the screenshots my group was given (Group A).
Screenshot 1: The Evil Within
There are a lot of diagonal lines in this picture that don’t relate to each other to create an organic, cluttered look. It’s applied both to the […]

First week! Space Invaders and D&D!
The first school week has come to an end, though I’ll probably be looking into more stuff this weekend. We were at the beginning of the week assigned to analyse the retro game Space Invaders and describe its different objects with properties, behaviors and relationships. We were supposed to look at it in a perspective as a designer, and I must admit I was struggling a bit. I have been coding for a couple of years now and I can’t really […]

Analysis of Screenshots & 3D Level
The first Screenshot to analyze was this one, a picture of batman in a cave with (presumably) the batplane behind him. The first things to take note of in this picture is the tilt and perspective of the picture. The tilt and the diagonal lines in the picture are there to emphasize movement or mobility in the picture making it a ”action” shot. The vertical lines and the perspective are there to emphasize the power of batman, standing on […]

Hello there fellow Internet user!
My name is Sven Almberg and I have just started studying Game Design And Programming at Uppsala Uni, Campus Gotland. It’s the first time I’ve ever been to Gotland and I must say it is incredibly beautiful here, it really went way past my expectations. I grew up in a small village in Sweden… or I should say 4 kilometers outside the village… in the middle of nowhere. Though the surroundings there is beautiful I must say that Gotland and Visby […]

Hello all, I recently begun studying Game design and graphics at Uppsala University, Campus Gotland. This will be my blog documenting the work I’ll be doing during the next two or three years time, hopefully it will be interesting!
During this week we’ve mostly had introductory lectures. The two courses we’re reading right now are Written and spoken communication and Game design and analysis. In the latter we were tasked to play Space Invaders and to analyse what objects the game […]

The Third Dimension
After a summer lost in the uncharted wilds of Nyköping, I have finally returned to school to start studying again. This time, I will venture into the third dimension, learning to work in 3ds Max.
Our first assignment using the software was to make a mock-up environment that could fit into a game of our choice (we picked ‘Journey’). We would then chose a key word (in our case ‘solitude’) from a list, and try to somehow use that word to […]

First week of 3D, Analysis
A picture analysis with the help of some “elements of art”
Evil within Line: Most of the lines are vertical by looking at the trees, this gives us a feeling of inferiority. For example if we have to look up towards something or someone we feel small, things that are above us tend to feel more powerful. This can be seen through pictures taken of a person from a down-top perspective. We can also see that the tree branches […]

New semester = 3D-modeling and other cool stuff
The summer is over and the second year has just started. This semester I will start learning 3D and I’m so freaking excited!
This first week we’ve been analysing screenshots with focus on the elements of art, such as Line, Shapes, Space, Value, Colour and Texture. I must tell I haven’t played any of these games, which gives me a fresh look at these pictures.
The first screenshot is from Batman.
Line: the camera is tilted and the lines are diagonally, which […]
