Week 3.

As week three comes to an end, so does another week full of exciting new ways to construct and design games.
At the first days of the week, we were given a lecture on pitch, documentation, and design documents, and the importance of these. By documenting the things we design, by keeping track of what we’re doing, it gets harder to get lost. There seems to be a heavy focus on getting us all used to writing academically, something I’m not […]

Game workshop with Ernest Adams

During Thursday afternoon and Friday morning we had a workshop with Ernest Adams, who has written one of the books in our course literature (Fundamentals of Game Design). First, he had a lecture that was very interesting. Ernest said he made the lecture before the MDA concept was even a thing, but you could still hear bits and pieces of it during the lecture, although it might’ve been under other names.
For the workshop we were divided into groups of five and […]

Mechanics are hard

What do you get when your assignment and course material contradicts each others and the presentation that should have been uploaded isn’t there. At least a confused as fuck student.
Maybe it’s just me, but the game workshop where I took the role as the mechanics designer was really weird. The paper was full of fill in the blanks of gameplay modes. The description says I should design core mechanics. The course material says there are lots of types of mechanics. […]

“Workshop Introduction”

So today we got a rather short noticed task… We were separated into groups of five and we were supposed to deliver a game pitch the very next day at 1 PM. Each one in the group decided a role, or we discussed about whom wanted which role in the group.
Each group received a unique “dream”, the dream was supposed to be fulfilled and contained the genre or goal our game was supposed to have. We got the dream “I want […]

MDA and the road from idea to design

Hello people!
I am sorry that I have not updated what I have done for a while, but I simply have not had the time. I am going to keep this going though and I am trying to keep my goal I mentioned in my first post. “I am going to try to update this blog as often as I can.”

Now. What have I been doing the last couple of weeks?
We got our first assignment in our “Communication”-course. We had to […]

As for example MDA that we have studied last week and to come up with our own version of an creeping doom game where we are supposed to give the player the sensation that they are going to make it in time and survive, as well at the same time […]

Creeping doom and scary games

What is horror games? Does it make you feel afraid or does it just scream in you face?Horror games has the last years had a really dull view of fear. The game industry thinks that simply a monster in a closet will get us happy and content with the scare factor. And while monsters can be scary, just having them chase us is not enough to make a good horror game. Dead Space wants to call itself a horror game, […]
