This period I choose to focus on my main characters, which I drew in Photoshop. A sketch of one of the characters – the player avatar the moth, is presented above. I started by looking through the mood board to find the feelings conveyed through the experience of the avatar that we wanted to visually convey to the player, the feeling of being alone in a mysterious darkness filled with dangers having lost your children to a treacherous light.
I then […]

BLUP, Main Character, Basic Animations

2017-02-09
BLUP, the main character of which the player will take control in our game based on the Echo concept document, is a small explorer-robot-submarine whose sole purpose is the exploration of deep and dark waters where no one else has ever been. What follows is an insight into the creative process leading up to four finished animations for the player movement.
Creative Process
In the conceptual stages of development, it was decided that the character would benefit from being cute and appealing […]

Lighting the scene

This is Anders from team Nazgul. I’ve been handling the more technical aspects of the graphics that we’re using to get the style we want and make our game look good.
There are two main parts to this: normal maps and light ramps.

A normal map is an image with colors that indicate values for a vector at each pixel. Lighting objects in rendering relies on the normal of a surface, which tells the direction the surface is facing. This is limited […]

Blog 1

This week I have been working on a concept and sprite for one of the enemies in our game. There are three kind of enemies, all that shoots differents kinds of bullets (electric, fire and ice). The theme of the game is supposed to be inspired by Hinduism in some sort of way, without stepping on anybody’s toes. That is why we have taken the more relaxed approach of “artstyles in Hinduistic countries”.

The enemy I started working on was supposed […]

Game Design 2: Designing a Cartoon like rock

By looking at several different pictures online about rocks, both cartoon rocks and actual rocks, I got a good understanding of how I wanted it all to look in the game. Although, rocks were nothing I had ever drawn before, making it a bit difficult for me to know where to start or even what to start with. Basically, I started drawing a big “blob”, in addition to later spreading it out and making it lean more towards a triangle […]

Meet Stephen 1.0

This is Stephen. He is the main character of the game SelFish, which is a game about this little fish who gets picked on by the other fishes in the aquarium where they all reside. Eventually he’s had enough, snaps and tries to kill everyone.

As one of the graphic designers in the Team Unicorn, I designed and drew Stephen. What I wanted to convey in the design was the feeling of Stephen as the underdog, slowly traversing the boundaries of […]

Creating Concept Art.

So, first things first, starting with creating concept art that would be appropriate to the given era and setting of the game.
The game document we chose, as a group, was ‘Burn Witch, Burn’ and was set in the heart of Scotland around the 16th century when witches were still at large.
For the first week, among other tasks, I took the task of creating concept art for the setting of our game. This began by researching different aspects of life at this […]

Animation in progress

This week I have been working on animations for our game and my graphics course. We have gotten a lecture about using bone animation in Unity to animate our characters. Although my character was suitable enough for a bone animation, I had difficulty following the lecture and understanding the Unity bone system. After having trouble keeping up with the lecture I spend some time fiddling with it at home. I could not get it to work and thus decided to […]

For the past week my team and I have been working on creating a playable shoot em’ up game called Selfish. Being a graphics student I, along with two other group members, were assigned the task of creating the game art. It was our job to absorb the words used to describe the game and provide a visual representation of what it should look like.
Not knowing what my team was expecting I drew some rough sketches as concept art. The […]

Character attack Sfx
I have made an attack sound for our main characters camera attack which is used to scare off fish. I created the sound effect by looking for sounds of a camera and any sci-fi charging sound under the public domain. I then imported both audio files to audacity, matched the ending of the charging sound with the beginning of the sound of the camera shutter. To finish i modified the audio with a low pass filter to create […]

Week 1 – Making bubbles

I work in the group Quetzalcoatl and we picked the game concept Selfish. In that game, the player character is a fish in an aquarium with a gun. A “bubble gun” to be specific. I was tasked with making the concept for the bubbles for said gun.
The image above was made by me 2 weeks ago. The bubbles over the middle of the image were made in PaintTool SAI but it was hard for me to make them look good so I […]

09-02-2017

This week I have been working on a few things, such as the background for the game which is what I am going to talk about this time.
Here is what it looks like at the moment:

I drew this in Photoshop and it took me about three hours. We had an idea about a flying temple in the sky for a level, so that is what I had in mind when I first sketched this up. I wanted something simple, so […]
