Game Jam 8h

This is a late update, we had a game jam at school 2 weeks ago were we would make a game in 8 hours only using gamemaker free. In total we worked for 6h30min because of a lecture we wanted to go to. The theme of the game jam was everyday doom. The only rules was that we could only use game maker and couldnt offend anyone, except Ulf. Ulf is a guy that work at the school. Sp because […]

Character design – CoBots

In CoBots the player(s) controls two maintainbots.
In the early development of CoBots, Me and Petra were tasked with designing the bots.
Since there should be two different robots which cooperated throughout the game, but still be able to do exactly the same thing, we didn’t want them to look to different from each other.
Concept sketches by Petra Medin.
We sketched some different concept of the bots and we then compared our ideas and decided on a final concept. We both liked […]

Concept sketch

We had a workshop today, me and my group, where we worked on our shmup-game. I’ve been making some concept art/sketches. The image below is a little less than half the size of the original sketch. And the title may still change.

I’ve made a couple of concepts for the main character and some other sketches as well. I might upload more concepts and sketches later.
I believe that the anatomy and perspective is a bit off in the sketch above. […]

Playtesting

We play tested our game on two different groups. Since our prototype cogwheels were made out of cardboard and tape, they didn’t work as well as we had hoped they would. Since the spinning didn’t work properly, the players who tested our game had to make a lot of thinking just to understand the basic concept of spinning the different cogwheels and how this correlates. Once the players understood the system, they thought it was quite interesting and saw potential […]

Game Ideas: Illuminati board game SINGLEPLAYER EXTRAVAGANZA!

Good day every reader out there!
I’ve been working with a small team of 4 people for the last couple of months to create a singleplayer board game. I was a little skeptic to it at first, but after running through some prototypes we are finally getting it to work. The game now actively works to protect itself and it really feels like the odds are stacking up against you the more noticed you get by the game.
The game itself is […]

Overview of important steps

I had written in a previous entry addressing my disbelief for the system we had created and how I failed to create a different tile system. Why did I go through all that trouble? Because just claiming it’s not “fun” enough or insignificant enough to the …

Tough Week

This has probably been the toughest week so far. Previously we’ve had about two assignments per week, one simple from design and one simple from communication. This week we had an assignment about three times as large as the usual one from communication, we had to play through Bioshock: Infinite and then write a 1000 word narrative analysis along with a few character “analysises”? I don’t know if that’s a word, anyway, in addition to that, we also have the […]

We finally have… something.

This Wednesday we spent yet another day in brainstorming agony, we had really tried to make the “angry old lady-game” work. We spent almost two whole workdays trying to bring life to this broken corpse of a system, it was time to move on.

Starting fresh left us very stressed, we needed a prototype finished for the next day at 13:00, yet we didn’t have a working game idea. So, once again, we went back to brainstorming. After a while […]

Board game meeting #4

A full day of board game design.
Starting at 9 am, I ran a bit late, but we where all set up at 9.15. So no greater harm done!

Today’s main mission: Get the core system running.

Other topics:
Alignment,
Weakness vs Alignment
Playing against the game,
Ingame choices, clear vs diffuse;
Coordinate system?
Item system,
Terror,
“overkill penalty” (Terror),

Core system
We used 4 sheets of the tileset template as a board game.
The initial thought was to start test on one of these, but it was just to small.

Movement system

Iteration #0
Place start […]

Board game meeting #3

Meeting #3
This was a rather short meeting, due to some members having other classes. But the overall plan was to get a schedule for when things had to be ready.
We tried this the week before but failed due to the portal being down at that moment, and people just forgetting after that.
However, we found out that we had to have a playable prototype of the game ready before Friday.

Simon presented some tiles for the game, different types of rooms where […]
