Blog 6: Postmortem – Beelonging

So, the development of the game Beelonging is now over, and it’s time to evaluate and reflect on the results. It’s been 9 intense weeks with a lot of hard work, long days at school and work during weekends, but I think the end result is also really good.
The end result
Beelonging is a 2D side scroller game with an infinitive scrolling, parallax background. The final version has five different character types; the bees, the wasps, the flies, the dragonflies and […]

Blog 5: Playtesting

It’s always important that the players understand your game. To make sure of that, and to receive feedback and critique to improve your game, it’s good to have several playtesting sessions. When you are developing a game it’s often easy to become “blind” and not notice things that are unclear or don’t make sense in the game. We’ve had two playtesting sessions during the development of the shoot em up game, Alpha and Beta.
So, how did the playtesting affect my development?
We received […]

“Hi Emma!
It was really intressesting to read about your work process and your reflections regarding the whale animations. I think you made it very clear to the reader how and why you made certain design decisions and how you improved the animations. It would be great if you explained a little bit about the principles of animation for the readers who knows little/nothing about animation, just to make sure they understand what you mean when […]

Blog 4: Parallallallax

Hi!
In this entry I will write about the development of the background for our game Beelonging.
In our game you control a swarm of bees flying back to save the beehive from a hungry bear. It takes place in a forrest, so for our background we wanted to include trees, stones, bushes etc. Since our game is a side scroller, we wanted to have a parallax background, which means that you divide the background into several layers (background, player, foreground) and make them […]

Hi Samantha!
First of all, I want to say that I really liked your game! It was fun, interesting, clear and very beautiful! Your game had a consistent quality, a unique aesthetic and it stood out from the other Behemoth games. Good job!
I think your blog post was very informative and structured and I like how you began with writing a little bit about how the whole development of Behemoth started.
You were also very clear about writing what went well and what […]

Hi Shifatul!
First of all, I’m sorry to hear that your alpha playtest didn’t work out as you wanted. It’s really annoying when that happens, but I also know that more teams had some technical problems with their games on the alpha playtest. I think you solved the problem good by just leave the playtesting and sit together and fix the problem. It’s also good that you did a lot of playtests in the team although, it’s better to let people […]

Blog 3: Hello Scrum

Hellu!
In this entry I will talk about how my team is working with scrum and how it affects my work and development.
Structure
For me scrum has meant more structure in my development. I get a clear overview what needs to be done and when. I think it’s really good to have a product backlog where we list all the assets for the game and then plan each sprint what needs to be done to meet up with the goal for […]

Blog 2: Honey explosion

Hi!
This week I’ve been working on the animation for the honey ball explosion!
Since I didn’t write much about the game last time, I will do it in this blog post so you get a better understanding on what the game is about. So, your beehive is under attack by a hungry bear, so you and your swarm of bees need to get back to the beehive as soon as possible to chase the bear away. Along the way to the beehive […]

Blog 1: Creating a color scheme

Hello!
My name is Petra and I am currently working on a shoot em up game called ‘Beelonging’. I am lead artist of the team and during the last week I’ve been working on making a color scheme for the characters in the game. The reason why I made a color scheme was to make it easier for the artists to share the colors while working on the same characters/background and also to see how the colors fit together.

Our game consists […]
