Monsters

This week I have mainly worked on the enemies of our game, the sea monsters. Up until now we have used the same sprite for all the monsters, but with different colored overlay. As I mentioned in my previous post, our monsters have weaknesses to different type of item properties. The items possess either one of these properties; hot, cold, dead or alive. And the monsters are ice, lava, undead and holy. We felt that we wanted to make the […]

Game Development – Introduction: Week 4

Last week we handed in our Game Design Document and (since it ate 25 hours of my time last week, leaving little time for anything else) that’s what this post will be about (so you have been warned). Note that this blog post will not be the actual contents and nitpicks of the design document (since that’s what the document is for) but rather a description of the structure of our document. Hopefully you’ll find at least something valuable in […]

Weekly assignment #1 Enemy Character.

Hello everyone!
The second course of game design has begun, and Team 13 (The ones who made Magic Writer) has been assigned to make a game for real this time.
All the games we have made this far has been only to design them, so everything you do on paper before you actually code and make the graphics for the game. We decided to take Team Mole Munch game, and make it a playable game.
We are about four weeks in, and I […]

Design for Magic Writer. Blog post 1, Every Pixel a Message

The First weeks of Scrum has passed. What have we accomplished? Hidden storytelling in design.

Not actual picture from the game. But it looks nice!

Design
The first weeks has passed and Magic Writer is coming along fine.
As the lead designer on the project my first main task is writing the design document, which turns out to be much more work than anticipated. But that part is coming along fine ever since we allocated time for me to do […]

Thought bubbles

These are four thought bubbles for our game Magic writers. They will be shown in the bottom of the screen while in game. The items which our wizard is able to throw are shown in the thought bubbles along with the name of the item. The items available are categorized by four different properties; Dead, Alive, Hot and Cold. The different sorts of items deal extra damage to certain enemies. For example a hot item takes extra damage to an ice […]

Game Development – Introduction: Week 2

So week 2! During week 2 we continued working on our Scrum-document and worked on a visual style for the game.
We decided to go for a tropical theme for our game partially so that we could draw on themes like the exploitation of rainforests and the era of colonization and partially because it would allow us to work with very saturated colors for the plants and protagonist and contrast against the enemy side’s metallic shades of grey and brown.
We needed to pick a style that […]

Rubber Crossbow

This post is a bit late, we finished this project a few weeks ago, and I’m now working on an entirely different project that I hope to write some about in the future. However, I still wanted to post this final artifact report/description thing that I wrote. Good day.
For the main characters primary weapon, we chose a crossbow that fires needles. I didn’t put that very much effort into designing the the looks of the weapon, I simply went for a […]

Finished

As mentioned in my last post I finished all the frames for the intro of “Terminal” Friday, and yesterday our Lead Programmer implemented them in our game. They slide in and out frame by frame, ending on a comic book page with them all gathered before perfectly timed with the music switch to the main menu, of wich he was very proud.
Here is how the finished page turned out.

As I have showed previously I […]

Busy week.

This is going to be a busy week. I have to finish my Scrum obligations, write the Post Mortem and then write another report for the programming class.
On Monday i managed to get additional color codes for a few extra objects in the game as well as fix the issue where items laying on the ground were drawn out after the player which was causing the player to walk under them. I attempted to find out the cause of an […]

Friday's Work

I finished colouring my last frames for the intro of “Terminal” today, since I had all values done and a colour scheme to follow it went rather quickly. I managed to finish the one I started yesterday and the last three ones, now all that is left is figuring out how it should be presented.
