Genius is effort
”Be better”
That is the mantra of our chief lecturer, the esteemed Mr. Adam Mayes. And indeed, isn’t that the very essence of being a human being, to strive towards bettering ourselves in any way we can?
Being a better game designer is about being professional and keeping a player-centric mindset all throughout the design process. To have a vision, daring to be unique, never compromise on quality and above all always keeping these elements grounded in the players experience.

An introduction
My name is Matilda and the past two weeks seemed to just fly by. So many new, lovely people, so many new places to see and so many new assignments. Game Design and Graphics at Uppsala University Campus Gotland: a good choice for me as I see it.
I will be updating this blog with everything I find especially interesting about the program or what I have learned from it over the week.
Stay creative,
Matilda

Week 1 at Campus Gotland
This is the delayed first post about my first week at the Game Design & Graphics program at Uppsala University, Campus Gotland.
Aside from all the fun welcoming ceremonies here at the island, there are currently two active courses: the first one being Introduction to Game Design and the second one being Written and Oral Communication. Our first assignments included analysing the classic game Space Invaders in terms of Objects, Properties, Behaviours, and Relationships between objects. The assignment got rather messy as […]

Week 2: The MDA Framework and SiSSYFiGHT
This week we were taught about the MDA Framework and worked on modifying the card game SiSSYFiGHT.
MDA stands for Mechanics, Dynamics, Aesthetics and makes up the fundamentals of how you design a game. Mechanics is all the systems at work. For example, if you were playing a card game, then you could say that the systems include drawing cards, playing cards and resolving their effects, basically setting the rules on how the game is played. If Mechanics is how the […]

Space Shooter idea #1
So some kind of generic Gradius 3 game/asteroid.
Except with the “unique” mechanics: “Thrust” – accelerate forward to mouse location. If enemy is hit during the way they gain the players momentum+x and bouncy around like you would play pool. If two enemies collide something will happen ofcourse.
Second mechanic: “Portal” creates a portal in a solid map object making it passable for the ship and other debris for a duration of time. can also be used to travel from the bottom […]

Master AI
Me and my group( Anders, Christian, David, Isak, Kim, Ludvig) has made a game based out of sissyfight. This was of course our assignment.
Firstly we added three mechanics. 1 which is that we should place all cards upside down, 2 is that we added a reveal card and 3 is that we should have a judge to calculate all damage.
Then the next day we got a memo to change our already changed version so that it would be educational. That […]

Week 2, MDA-framework.
So week number two has passed. This week we were thought of the MDA framework. MDA stands for Mechanics-Dynamics-Aesthetics.
Mechanics is in short terms how a game function and what the played can do within the game.
Dynamics is how the game is played by the player.
Aesthetics is how the player will or should feel when playing the game.
Also during this week we made a sissyfight revamp, which we call Master Ai.
It is pretty much a quiz game, which Adam(our teacher) did […]

Week 2. MDA.
The second week on Gotland has been inspiring in a whole new array of ways. With the introduction of the MDA -framework came a whole new way to look at games as both a designer and a consumer. Why do I enjoy this game, what does it offer me as a player that inspire this type of emotion in me? How can I use this emotional response as a designer?
If I want to my players to enjoy fellowship fun in […]
