Creating a cutscene
A cutscene was something that my team wanted to have in order to explain how the main character, Gillis, escapes from being burnt on the stake. The project manager of our team wrote down a script with the storyboard of each frame, and I went on with drawing rough sketches of the perspective, composition and lighting of each frame in Photoshop. Since there were quite the amount of frames I had to draw, I knew from the start that I […]

Background Art
This is an artefact I made from last week. I designed and drew several background borders for the game that would convey the setting to the player. The main locations for our game would be the village and, later on, the forest.
To start it off, I had a discussion with my team regarding the perspective. Our game is in a top-down perspective, but drawing trees and houses from that angle is difficult. For example, when I attempted to draw a tree […]

Animating the archer
My by far biggest artefact for this week has been to create and animate the archer sprite for our game. The archer is a static enemy that shoots ranged projectiles at the player, so I was spared from animating a walk cycle. On the other hand, I have clearly underestimated how to animate from a top-down perspective. Making animations loop nicely, on top of that, also proved to be difficult even though it is an issue I have faced before.

Animating a projectile
This week I have been working on a wide variety of assets for our game, but the artefact that I have chosen to write about for this week is the standard projectile I designed and animated. This projectile was produced during previous weeks, but it did take some time for me to finally get it right. I drew and animated the projectile in Photoshop using my Wacom Intuos Pro.
So, as the main character’s power is fire, it would only seem […]

Sprite animation
My main task for this week has been to create and animate a sprite, in this case the main character for the game my team Amarok is creating. I have started out by making several different drafts and rough animations during the previous weeks, but this week I set out to properly finish the sprite, and undoubtedly this has been the most time consuming artifact I’ve been working on this week. I made two animations for the sprite: an idle/movement animation as well […]
