Nice job Sasa!
I enjoyed reading this as it had some references to the different group stages! It was clear what you had learned and things that you felt needed improvement. It wasn’t too clear why you hadn’t left the second group stage, was it perhaps due to something serious or personal? In this case I understand! It was obvious that you had written about Scrum previously, but you seem to say there were things you needed to work on there. […]

Hello Michael,
Well done with the blog post! The details of benefit for both playtesting sessions was clearly documented and it was interesting to see how you iterated on the survey between sessions and learned from earlier shortcomings. The reason for doing this is pretty self-evident, but you elude to it quite well to make sure the reader is completely in sync with the text. Realistically there’s not a lot I’d improve on with this article, I think some of the […]

Good job Tomas,
Great ideas for a boss fight! The culmination of ideas are great, unfortunate that it hasn’t been tested yet. It is clear that you have a concise idea of the boss “fight” and it is also clear why you want to implement the whirlpools and in what way you believe this will impact the actual gameplay here. It is an interesting way to depict the boss. I found it interesting that you had a completely different view of […]

Post-Mortem
As the shoot ’em up project closes up, it is time to reflect on the process we went through. Going into it none of us had any real experience creating games. The idea of the project was to learn how the process worked and how we as a team cooperate to digitalize the vision we had starting out. As well as this we were expected to “learn by doing”, essentially creating a game with the purpose of learning how to […]

Playtesting
The two playtesting sessions seem to have been scheduled to help encourage testing in less familiar environments to get an outside perspective on the game we’re creating. As well as this, giving other people access to your game will help detect bugs or design issues that you haven’t thought about yourself. Other people play your game differently and so you can see what happens when it is played “incorrectly” so to speak. The issue we found with the Beta playtest […]

Level Design
Recently I have been working on level design. The idea we have behind building a level with everything in a predetermined place, is to make sure we can engineer the experience the player will receive from our game. We want the player to find the game mysterious, feel like they are looking for something unnatural and scary. The way we can do that is to scale down the challenge in terms of enemies. If we have enemies there, we can […]

Hello Edvin!
Great to hear you lift some concerns that I’m sure a lot of students have! It was interesting to hear another point of view of the Scrum framework, as well as quite expected that the incremental workflow has been what the group benefitted most from. You have formulated your blog post well with regards to how Scrum has affected you and why. It would have been interesting to hear how you try to deal with the Stand-up meeting issue, […]

Hello Magdalena,
Great job on the blog post! The post was very well structured, showing how the process was iterated upon throughout the sprint. As someone who doesn’t do any art this wasn’t useful at face value, but the general idea of iterations and the full involvement of the group in the decisions you made are of great value to new producers. The idea behind the iterations are also very clear, which helps the reader understand the general purpose. Furthermore all […]

Scrum – Has it helped?
The idea behind Scrum is to be more responsive to change. It encompasses an incremental structure to the project, where you work in smaller work cycles and develop a working solution continuously. As such, the main concepts within Scrum that we use are the sprints and the product backlog. The sprint planning and sprint review has worked well most of the time. The sprint review was missed once due to my being out of town, but was solved by filling […]

Making some sound
For this week, I have been working on the background soundtrack for Umibozu. Since the game we are aiming to create is supposed to be uncomfortable and mysterious, music wasn’t necessarily something we wanted. Instead I decided to try and keep the soundtrack somewhat ambient, with the odd uptick in certain sounds. I encountered some issues with saving the project in Audacity (the music editor I use). Eventually I managed to fix it, but this took up a significant amount […]

Creating a workspace
As a project manager I have made it a point to promote productivity with the help of a communal environment. I want my team members to work in a space where they feel like they are working together, where we can promote the feeling of togetherness and also where we can just talk to each other as friends and take real breaks. To achieve this I decided to set up my apartment for this. A sturdy kitchen table and a […]
