Meet us in Stockholm on the 4th of April!

The Department of Game Design at Uppsala University is attending The Swedish Game Industry Career Fair, at Nalen in Stockholm. The event is free to attend, and is an excellent opportunity to meet a ton of game studios and whole lot of game educations, to see if game development might be for you.
The 4th of April is ~10 days before the national application deadline, so we highly recommend you swing past and check the options out before applying […]

About the Alumni of the Year award

We are embarrassingly proud of our graduates and former students of the education. We have been teaching game design- and development on Gotland since 2001, so our network of alumni counts in the thousands, with careers across the globe.
[map generated 180317].

They constantly surprise us with their insight, their productivity, their skill, their willingness to listen, advice and help out. Whether it’s as jury at the Gotland Game Conference, or inspiring the generation of students coming […]

The Jury (so far)

The jury represents the most hard-working participants at the Gotland Game Conference (save for our students, natch). Jurors travel from around the globe to hear our students’ presentations a day before the conference even starts, and to spend the better part of a week playing all of the student productions on the show floor.
Johannes Wadin (Might & Delight), leading the 2nd Year Jury at the 2011 Gotland Game Conference
Each member brings their own set of experience and […]

Regional collaboration for serious games

Universen (“The Universe”) is a magazine for Uppsala University employees. Issued six times a year, ~7100 copies are sent to the homes of all employees and other interested parties. In the first issue of 2018 our colleague Lina Sors Emilsson is interviewed about her course Product Development for Games, 15 credits (5SD952).

The interview is unfortunately entirely in Swedish, but she’s talking about how we use this […]

Help us create a “Woke award”

The Gotland Game Conference is looking over its award categories this year. There will be many changes, but one of higher priority than most is the addition of a… “diversity award”, for lack of a better term.
We work hard in the education and with the conference to engage thoughtfully with issues like representation, gender, intersectionality and the perspectives and lived experiences of the non-[white […]

More games to San Francisco!

The 2018 Game Developer’s Conference will once again feature the alt.ctrl.GDC exhibition – an area at the GDC dedicated to games that use alternative control schemes and interactions. Last year our students snagged two nominations. This time we’re going to have to ship three of these builds across the Atlantic.
Gamasutra has the complete lineup of games from all around the world, and have also begun interviewing each team.
If you are at the […]

Bull-Dog

Bull-Dog is a two player game made in Unity, comical cat and mouse style played in an arena environment resembling a farm pasture.

One player uses a helmet with horns and a Wii-remote gyroscope on it to control the bull character by tilting their head in different directions. The other player controls the dog character using a cycle handlebar with a Wii-remote attached to its center for the gyroscope as well. To win the game the bull […]

Global Game Jam 2018

Our students just spent an intense weekend running a local jam site on campus Gotland. The theme this year was “transmission” and in just 48 hours they managed to produce no less than 13 games.
Here’s some photos from the play-testing earlier today:

Speaking at TEDxUppsalaUniversity

… well, spoke rather, as TEDx Uppsala University took place a few months back. But the recordings were just made available so here goes!

Our own Patrick Prax ventured off island back in November to give a talk about co-creation in gaming – how players literally help build the games they play. In it he situates play and modding as important and deeply social forms of cultural participation. The talk highlights often-neglected parts of gaming (such as; community-driven […]

Photos from the Alumni Days 2017

The recorded lectures are made available on our YouTube-channel!
X-Mas Dinosaur knew what was up!
Our new Head of Department Magnus Johansson and his spruce mustache opened the event.
Eat Create Sleep’s Martin Greip gave the first presentation; an intimate talk about mental health and the risks of building your personal identity on the work that you do. It’s about the myths of creativity, about self-care in the creative industries, and about maturing professionally.“Suffering isn’t […]
