Weekly Report 2013-11-25

This report came out behind schedule, sorry for that! Short story is that I became so tired after handing in my homework for the week that I forgot to write it. Anyway, enough with the delays!

At the start of the week we were introduced to the methods of perspective involving visual guidelines in the form of grids. A repetitive and tedious endeavour to be frank, but the result is a most useful tool to help you with keeping any object […]

Perspective week

Hellu there!
This week we went through perspective and space. I’ve learned techniques for making different shapes in planes without losing the ratio of the shape. The toughest one to understand was the ellipse, and actually, I still don’t really get it and draw them most on feeling. (I have found some YouTube tutorials of drawing ellipses that I shall check out this weekend thou, to settle this once and for all, hehe)
Other than those murdering ellipses, perspective is something I […]

Quick update and thoughts

No, I haven’t forgotten about the blog. I’ve been supposed to write for some time now, but I didn’t get my thumb loose to actually post anything until now. There are a few things that have happened since last time, so here, have a quick update;
The shmup-project was finished and all of the groups pitched their game-designs in the beginning of this month. There were many interesting titles and ideas that were presented, which was nice to see. I’m proud […]

Perspectives & workshop

While working with the assignment to draw a car and an airplane, what I found to be most difficult was to figure out what to make of it. What kind of airplane, what kind of car etc. At one point during my drawing of the airplane, I was trying to pinpoint the middle of the airplane “cylinder” but couldn’t remember how to do it, eventually I solved the problem though.
It feels like the perspective lectures came right on time since […]

I haven’t written anything since our design project, so I guess I should write a bit about what happened since then. Our project was a successs without doubt. The week after the presentation was probably the most relaxed week we had since school started. I don’t really remember what happened after that, I went to Stockholm for Gamex at some point… Hmm…
Eventually our 2D course started. I thought it would be one of the easier courses for me, since I […]

Turnarounds

I’ve been taking a slight break from 2D work in order to do some intense 3D-crunch. These are a few character turnarounds that I will be working on for a while. Up till now I’ve only worked on the shark-girl which has been really fun. I’m about 40% done with the actual model which essentially means that I need to get the head, hair and clothing done. And once I have the mesh done I’ll get back to more 2D […]

Enchant.js Workshop: “Zombie Run”

Today we finished a brief but intense workshop using the Enchant.js software. CEO of Ubiquitous Entertainment, Inc. Ryo Shimizu and Mr. Brandon McInnis who had flown from America just to see us and do this workshop with us first year students. It came pretty much out of the blue and I quickly teamed up with Oliver Bolt and Oscar Mohlin. They are two course mates with the most experience in software development prior to our education and they are very driven […]

24 hour gamejam!

At the end of Ryo Shimizu’s lecture, we got a suprise gamejam at our hands. Groups were quickly assembled and people started with their projects. I worked with Nicolina, Christoffer and Björn on a game called Bu-bu buta pirates! which was a sidesrolling shooter where you control a flying ship shooting down enemies.
It was a difficult task, since none of us really had any experience in programming. Even though it was hard,  Nico managed to handle the programming really nicely […]

The game jam have been a lot of fun and have been an awesome experience.
Me and Adam Wrange worked together without any programmers to help, so it has been a challange but a lot of fun.

Designing Systems/Game Ideas: Resource Dependencies

When I was eating today I got a crazy idea for an economy or resource system for an RTS that could become very fun to use and would force players into a economic war and a “real” war. It would use scarcity of resources and trades to be the primary source for resources.
What this means in practice would be a system that forces players to interact and use trades to get everything they need to obtain specific goals, such as […]
