Assignment 3 – Character Modeling – A New Challenge!

The previous week, we worked on our character backgrounds to create the character that we wanted to make for this assignment. But once we were done with those character sheets, we were asked to swap concepts with another student in the class! I was from here on just the “employer” of the student who was going to create Palo’h (Marcus Svensson) and I was now “employed” by Oscar Mohlin to create his character Etha. (Seen below)

Assignment 3 – Character Modeling – Palo'h the Shaman

Week 6 started off with prepping for the new and final assignment; Character modeling.
The objective for this weeks was to find a concept (your own or taken from the internet) and write a character background for it.
Unfortunately, with a lot of assignments pressing, I chose to take a interesting concept I found on deviant art.

This concept (consisting of an action pose and turn around) is created by user Asashi-Kami and can be found here. I’m new to character […]

Advanced Hard Surface Modeling Assignment – Finishing Up

Final week for the Advanced Assignment is this week so I have been focusing on textures and just making the model presentable in different ways.
Last week I had problems getting the color for the diffuse  texture the way I wanted it. That problem continued and I kept digging a deeper hole of disappointment with it and I just could not get it right! After many frustrating hours I decided to risk it and begin all over with the texture. But […]

Advanced Hard Surface Modeling Assignment – UV-mapping and Texturing

Textures and UV-mapping have been occupying all my time this week. After getting through the UV-mapping without going completely insane I was looking forward to start with the texturing since it will bring a bit more life to the model I have been working on for a while now!
Being inspired by the new Call of Duty game, I decided that phototextures would fit my model the best. So I browsed cgtextures.com to find something that would be similar […]

Advanced Hard Surface Modeling Assignment – Finish the Model

Last week consisted of me trying to figure out how to build the mech and what I needed to change in the concept to make it work. This week has been all about finishing the model, construction wise. By the end of last week I was basically finished with the model but I knew that I had made a ton of mistakes regarding clean up, since I’m used to make models for product rendering and not for games. The difference […]

Board Game Analysis 2 – Portobello Market

We were yet again tasked with playing a board game and then write an analysis of our experience with that game. The main goal is to get an understanding of the core systems and how they affect they game.
We chose to play Portobello Market. To gain as much understanding as possible of the game and its different play styles, we decided to play the game on three times.
Introduction
Portobello Market was released 2007 by Lautapelit.fi and can be categorized as an […]

Week 2 – Genre Analysis.

Unfortunately, I was sick last week and missed both 3D lectures. This made me miss that week’s assignment and blog post where the students had to create 3 different crates based on different genres in games, but I thought that I could do a variant of that assignment. I can chose three genres and analyze their environment art to see what builds those genres and to see if there is any similarities between the different games within the same genre.

Advanced Hard Surface Modeling Assignment – Prepping

As the first few weeks have passed of our first 3D modeling course at the university, our teacher saw that some of the students already knew the basics. So, she was kind enough to create a more advanced assignment for a select few.
This assignment consists of modeling an ingame vehicle based on existing concept art. (Seen above) and also chose a game where this vehicle could be from and try to make our models fit that theme.

I chose to model […]

First Week of 3D Computer Graphics: Theory and Application I

During our first class we were tasked with analyzing certain screenshots using some Elements of Art. These elements were: Line, Shapes, Space, Value, Color and Texture.

Developer: Warner Bros. Games Montréal   Publisher: Warner Bors. Interactive Entertainment   Release: 2013
Batman: Arkham Origins
The lines in this composition are mainly diagonal which creates a sense of movement, heroism and determination. To create these feelings, the camera’s perspective is slightly slanted and it’s also looking upwards at Batman.
The shapes mainly consist of man-made objects. […]

10 Week Project – Post 6 – Interior Decorating

As we are closing in on the final days of this project I, as the designer, have not had too much to design lately. So most of my time was supposed to be dedicated to playtesting, but since we bumped into some code-related problems, we needed to wait a bit with that.
So, what can I do while our lovely programmers are coding away?
Most of the feedback we received during the latest playtesting (a part from a few bugs) was that […]
