Week 9: Completion of Space Shooter Project
This week we have finally completed the space shooter project. All in all, the week has been pretty uneventful. Most of the time has gone to working on the pitch, where we would show off our work and try to sell it to our classmates, as they are the ones who will decide which games to actually develop later on. Our pitch I felt was quite successful. Other than that, work went into the One Page and Concept Document. On […]

Week 7 & 8: Continuation on Space Shooter
The seventh week mainly went into fleshing out the core components of our new shooter. The paper prototype we worked on featured three lanes, each with a tree at the player’s end. In these lanes, the game master, representing the AI, places enemy cards which the player will be forced to react to and defend against. The player then places his or her cards in the lane they want to defend. Both player and enemy cards have different attack and […]

Week 5 & 6: Random Narrative Concept and Space Shooter Assignment
During the fifth week, we were assigned the task to randomize a narrative and characters using They Fight Crime and Rory’s Story Cubes. They Fight Crime is a webpage that randomly creates two characters with different traits and Rory’s Story Cubes are a bunch of dice with images that you roll and then arrange in an order of your own choosing. After doing that, you attempt to make up a story involving all the images in that order. The group […]

Week 3 & 4: The Workshop
The previous weeks we have mainly been working with creating games. During the third week me and my assigned group were tasked to create a game based on a random concept given to us by the teacher. Our concept was that the player is a reporter in a war, and cannot use weapons or violence in completing their missions. We ended up with the idea of the setting being in a war between France and Spain. The player, as the […]

Week 2: The MDA Framework and SiSSYFiGHT
This week we were taught about the MDA Framework and worked on modifying the card game SiSSYFiGHT.
MDA stands for Mechanics, Dynamics, Aesthetics and makes up the fundamentals of how you design a game. Mechanics is all the systems at work. For example, if you were playing a card game, then you could say that the systems include drawing cards, playing cards and resolving their effects, basically setting the rules on how the game is played. If Mechanics is how the […]
