BGP – Day 16

Subtle glow
On my last post I mentioned working on the animations, that didn’t happen since the character had to be re-skinned. Therefore I cleaned up the material for the hand a little more, where I added some variation to the emissive, now it increase and decrease over time. Here is what it looks like now.

BGP – Day 15

After Easter Work
This week it’s mostly about animations and the first step to get our captured motions into proper animations is to clean the motion capture data in the program we are using, called Motive. The cleaning involves watching the different tracking markers and see if any of them disappear. This can happen if they are getting occluded by a body part or if they are confused as being another marker. This is fixed by either re-labeling them to their actual […]

Clean up
It had to be done, I’ve spent today cleaning up folders and files from different unreal projects so that it is all more focused. I needed to prepare them since we are later going to share one project and it is important that I can find and share all my work in one project. What I’m thinking about to look into next is to get the fire to stick to the hand and also have that trigger the material […]

BGP – Day 13

Better late than never!
Well, its not a motto of mine, but last night I didn’t do my daily post. It wasn’t because I haven’t worked, rather the opposite. Since I have dwelled into a lot of subjects that I have never explored before, It can be very tiresome for the mind to try to remember all that new information. I decided to relax for the rest of the evening and prepare for the next day, as me and my girlfriend is going […]

A Burning Arm and Motion Capture
Continuing my work, I started the day looking more into the material transition of the arm to make it change materials. Currently it’s to make it look like its glows as it catches on fire and then have it transition into the normal skin of the arm. But the transition has to look more natural than what it did in the previous video and I have found a solution, I just have to implement it.
The […]

Watching more tutorials!
During today I spent time changing my particle fire to look more ”calm” as that was the feedback I got from our teachers during our feedback session. Also I changed the smoke, for a larger fire, to black. Since its a fire that is using oil to burn.
When that was done I started working with doing dynamic textures for the hand, so that I could get the hand to change texture as it catches fire. We don’t have any […]

What I have worked on!
Here it is! This is the materials I have created from scratch watching a tutorial from Pluralsight.com and shows what can be created from some of the things I mentioned in previous post about materials and their behaviors.

From learning about Material basics like, metallic, roughness, reflectivity, refraction, Fresnel and transparency. To texturing, masking, colors, normal maps, parallax and parameters. It also included some light programming through the blueprint system in Unreal Engine 4.
Why I spent time […]

Prototyping & Materials

The plan for today was prototyping with paper, glue and a lot of coloring pencils! The fastest way to try a idea is to build it as fast as you can and then try it, if it fails, try again. It is looked upon as a very forced way of design and is not commonly used in other industries. But when it comes to games, it is easy to test a mechanic (which is similar to rules in […]

Bachelor Degree & Materials
Continuing our work on the game, we discussed today on what we are trying to learn but also what we need to do during the day. At the same time we had a ”information lecture” we had to attend to, concerning those who is studying to get a bachelor degree. Where we got to know which courses we can and cannot choose, it is a bit confusing, but I think I got a good grasp of it. Still […]

Planning and cleaning
It’s day 8 and we have done our first scrum meeting, discussing what is going to be done this week. Which for me including wrapping up the fire effect, adding some details to it and trying to figure out how to get it to trail after the flame better. Also I will start watching a tutorial on how we can get materials to change dynamically in the game Engine.
The cleaning part is that we got access to the […]

The growth of the tree
Today I have continued my work on the animation tree, finished it and also written the complete shoot-list for the motion capture shoot that we will have to schedule. All this from the comfort of my apartment. I for some unknown reason managed to hurt my foot and to let it rest I chose to work from home.
I won’t go into details  about animation trees in this post as that can be read in my previous post […]

A tree of animation
Welcome back! I haven’t started doing gardening (even though the weather is a lot better) the headline is referring to a Animation tree. Its purpose is to capture all the possible animations for an specific character within the game. And since we only have one, we only need to create one. But It might sound easier than it is.
The reason it can get complicated, is because it is done through a flow chart connecting the different animations […]
