Paper Hero
Yesterday we got the task to pick a famous digital game, analyze its ”core experience” – the stuff that makes the game fun to play, which can be different from game to game – and make our own boardgame version of the game. My group of 5 choosed Guitar Hero. The tricky part is now to make this into a boardgame and still keep the core experience from Guitar Hero… Yesterday we got the task to pick a famous digital game, analyze its ”core experience” – the stuff that makes the game fun to play, which can be different from game to game – and make our own boardgame version of the game. SiSSYFiGHT workshop
After playing SiSSYFiGHT 3000, students were given a 90 second brainstorming session to come up with a new setting for the game. These new settings had to capture the original’s aesthetics (MDA game design framework), which were identified as:
Fellowship: Negotiation, Cooperation, Betrayal
Challenge: Tactics, Problem Solving
Narrative: Drama
Students were then divided into groups and had two hours to chose […]

Assignment week 3 part 2
These are the objects I modeled, the second two where cleaned later on by my two colleagues Seamus Newman and Viktor Kjellson. I will start to talk about the optimization that Seamus and Viktor did with my crates and later move on to the boxes i made. The task here is to clean the model from overlapping faces, problems with N-gons and reducing the amount of tris we have on our models etc. First off, these are the ones I made, and […]

Impending Doom
This is an essay that I wrote for my game design course. It is just copied from the document that I handed in and i felt like posting it here for easy access.
Introduction
This essay is about the design of an impending doom game where the player will lose in the end but has to feel like they could have made it. I choose to make a game about surviving alone in space with the only thing to do is controlling […]

Cooperative chess game
Fundamentals of game design chapter 1 exercise 2: Use a chessboard and chesspieces and the ways they move to create a cooperative game where two players work together to achieve a victory condition. My first idea on this is to have the colors represent each player. This makes it easier for the players to consider themselves important and also guides them in what they can move. I want the enemy to start on the other side of the board and have a system […]

Perparing for “assignment 2″ in 3D1
I was looking at two objects i saw that the jar would be something easy to model and I knew that it was something that I would manage to complete pretty easy. Looking at the dagger I realized that this would be a more difficult choice, but there were reasons to why i chose it. If I would start modeling this one I would learn a lot more, the complex shapes and details would suit me well when I want […]

Peer Review: Carcassonne. Original analysys by Max Nordlund.
The second part of the assignment about board games was to exchange games with another group, play their game and write a peer review for a member of the other group’s system analysis.
The person i’m writing a peer review for is Max Nordlund who wrote about Carcassonne, the original analysis can be found here.

I enjoyed reading your analysis, I found it well put together and well-paced where you don’t mix up the content relating to the different […]

Mechanics are hard
What do you get when your assignment and course material contradicts each others and the presentation that should have been uploaded isn’t there. At least a confused as fuck student.
Maybe it’s just me, but the game workshop where I took the role as the mechanics designer was really weird. The paper was full of fill in the blanks of gameplay modes. The description says I should design core mechanics. The course material says there are lots of types of mechanics. […]
